Taking the Higher Path

(by Rizza June D. Castillon, R.N., Bacolod City National High School)

When something begins, we generally have no idea how it is going to end”. - A quote from my all-time favorite series - GREY’s ANATOMY.

The sudden loss of one teacher in our School due to COVID-19 hit us by surprise and consumed us for months. Nobody predicted that COVID-19 would kill many people, force countries to lockdown, shut schools and public places and put our life on hold. It made the whole world bleed, and it spread like wildfire.

Being the school nurse, gathering data was difficult since I cannot meet face to face with the faculty and staff. While monitoring positive cases, I was engulfed with the panic and anxiety of teachers exposed to COVID victims, with the urgent reports for submission, queries from other agencies, and the vexation of countless sleepless nights! It was as if my brain has been forcibly rewired to understand why these things happen. I felt my life was turned upside down, redirected and reprogrammed. Nonetheless, I continued to perform my duties notwithstanding the risks.  I reached out to my co-employees despite their fear and mine.  By doing so, I believe I took the higher path - the path of understanding, compassion, courage and LOVE. Love of SERVICE.

The whole process was sad and tough. But it ended anyway. (Now who says we don’t have any idea on how these things would end?) As Aeschylus once said, “Time brings all things to pass.

  1. I always love and take real pride in listening to and telling your story, Nurse Rizza June D. Castillon. I have seen how you selflessly went of your way to help and serve your school - Bacolod City National High School, as a Public Health Nurse II. You do not just perform as a government health worker but constantly go beyond the call of duty to look for creative ways to be of concrete help, come "to the rescue" and fill the gap at work. You are young, yet you possess the right attitude, emotional maturity, discernment and foresight of a leader. It is indeed, the interplay of proper upbringing and genes, Nurture and Nature, that brings about the higher and best version of oneself. Padayon! DepED Bacolod City is very proud of you!
